Description W55V96 is the high integrated chip for TV-toy application. In W55V96, some devices are embedded; including 65C816 µC, CRT controller (CRTC), TV encoder, Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) and other miscellaneous peripherals. Additionally, the Direct Memory Access (DMA) mechanism can make W55V96 more powerful in image processing. Other than external single ROM can be storage media for game contents, W55V96 also supports CD-ROM, CMOS sensor and LCM solution for more flexible applications.

  • 27 MHz X’tal used for 27 MHz system and up to 13.5 MHz clock for µC.
  • Eleven interrupt sources, including Vertical blank, Horizontal blank, I/O port, Timer 0, TimerG, TimerN, Right Justified Interface (RJ), External Input, Serial Port Interface (SPI), Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) and DMA.
  • DMA mechanism.
  • Built-in 16KB Program and Video RAM (PVRAM) and up to 16M external ROM. Maximum 512KB external VRAM is supported.
  • Built-in 16KB mask ROM for CD-ROM solution.
  • Built-in 32B programmable interrupt vectors.
  • Total 1, 280B RAM is dedicated to Sprite Attribute Table (SAT) and 768B RAM for color palette RAM.
  • Embedded TV-encoder that supports 320*240 pixel resolution.
  • Four programmable color modes: 4/16/64/256 and 16M different colors.
  • Twenty-four picture layers: Background 0, Background 1, Sprite x 20, Text x 1 and CMOS sensor image x 1. Layer priority is: Text, Sprite, BG1, Sprite, BG0 and CMOS sensor: Sprite can be configured to be higher or lower than BG1.
  • 8x8 pixel patterns in BG0 and BG1. Both BG0 and BG1 have 5 planes scrolling functions. Each BG cell has X mirror control feature in 16, 64 and 256 color modes.
  • 16x16 pixel patterns in sprite layers, 224 sprites per frame, and 20 sprites per scan line maximum, each sprite has zoom-in (x2) and mirror functions.
  • 8x16 or 16x16 pixel patterns in Text, 8 lines of text and 27 characters per line.
  • Built-in UART, SPI and RJ interfaces for different communication applications.
  • Light pen interface is embedded.
  • Built-in CMOS sensor interface for image display only or output video data with external LCM for handheld game solution.
  • Dual tone melody and two-channel noise generator, it can be output from audio DAC or PWM output.
  • Watch Dog Timer (WDT)
  • Built-in slave mode SPI In-Circuit Emulation (ICE) logic.
  • 24 bi-directional ports and 8 input ports, all built-in.
  • Low power 3.0V ~ 3.6V operating voltage.
